Artist Statement

He is a treasure. Born in 1929, Mr. Reitz has emerged as one of the most important and influential figures in contemporary studio ceramics of the 20thand 21stcenturies. He received his training at Alfred University in the early 1960’s, and has spent the last fifty years working first with salt and then with wood-firing.  Known for his influential technological advances and innovations to the salt-glaze process, he is affectionately known as “Mr. Salt.” Wood-firing for the last 20 years, he is now excited about adding color to the process. One of the last great abstract expressionist artists working in clay, his work is worthy of honor and respect. Those interested in sculpture and the wood-firing process would consider it essential to have a piece of Mr. Reitz’s in their collection. Museums marking the most respected ceramic artists of this era would consider Don Reitz among the most renowned. We are lucky that he is still working today and show his work with high regard.
