Press Release

Lacoste/Keane Gallery presents the second exhibition in a two-part series, the show and sale of important works from the Halsey and Alice North Collection II: Contemporary Japanese Ceramics from January 19 to February 16, 2019. The first part, Contemporary American Ceramics was presented December 8, 2018 to January 5, 2019.

Halsey and Alice North are founding leaders of The North Group Inc., which has guided many non-profit organizations with fundraising, planning and development for over 30 years. They are passionate supporters of contemporary ceramics and have assembled one of the foremost collections of contemporary Japanese ceramics and American ceramics in the USA. Since downsizing their New York City abode, they have appointed Lacoste/Keane Gallery to find new homes for their large collection.

The Norths are leaders in the field of collecting Japanese Ceramics.  The groundbreaking exhibition Contemporary Clay: Japanese Ceramics for the New Century was built around their collection and shown at the MFA Boston and the Japan Society NYC accompanied by a catalogue.  Numerous pieces from that show are featured and offered for sale in the current exhibition at Lacoste/Keane Gallery. Museum groups have toured the Norths’ home and works from their collection can be seen at the MFA Boston, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Freer | Sackler Galleries/Smithsonian/Washington DC, Peabody Essex Museum, Mint Museum, and Portland (Oregon) Museum of Art.

Each work comes with extensive documentation to provide the audience a full history, context and provenance. As diligent supporters of ceramic art, the Norths have fostered over the years, close friendships with the artists through studio visits, interviews, cataloguing works and acquisitions. For each of the exhibitions at our gallery, they will be giving a PowerPoint presentation at the Collectors Preview and a walk through at the Public Opening Reception. Works will be available for sale online and at Lacoste/Keane Gallery.
